There is this misconception with people out there that an animators live luxurious lives.
That the animators get paid lots and live in fame and glamour.

The truth is, animators are really just factory workers.

Producers are the ones who live the luxurious life. Essentially, you can call them the businessmen of the animation/film industry.

Artists are being paid only according to what we are capable and supposed to do "namely be factory workers".
We do NOT get a cut out from the profit of our work.
Sad as it may seem, it's just the hard fact of life.

I'm a 3D animator. My specialty, is motion.
I don't do anything else other then "move the character".
Now this is overlooked many times because people just don't see the necessity and importance of understanding motion and most of the times, the motion is so good the audience don't even feel it.
Hence people take it for granted. This is also one reason why quite a number of aspiring artist don't want the job title of "animator".
Because there is no glamour in showing off "movement" as opposed to showing of a character you actually modeled or effects that you actually do.
People treat animators as "cheaters" simply because we did not create the characters. We "just move them" and "how hard can it be?"

My belief is, if people don't care about the animation (motion) because they take it for granted in the animation you are working on, That's actually a compliment!
You've done it so well and so seamlessly!

Don't  understand what I'm talking about? Well...
____
The animation industry is divided into many segments which includes management, producing, marketing and distributing.
Now I live in the "producing" side of the industry and it again is divided into sub groups.
Pre-production, production, post production.

Pre-production is where the concept gets visualized and gets translated into a language that everyone can understand and associate with (namely pictures) and where the script gets finalized before being handed down to be "worked on"

In 3D animation, these concepts will then have to be translated into a 3dimensional asset.
That's where the 3D modellers come in. They build the characters into 3D. After that it is handed down to another department called Riggers who essentially add bones to the character so that it can "be moved".
Only then can it be passed down to the animators.

Production (different companies will view the stages of pre-pro to production differently, but this is normally where things start to roll)
The animators will then move the character and bring it to life according to what is required following the script.
It is then passed down to the Lighters to add lights to the animation so that the colors and the atmosphere don't look "dead". Usually at this stage, it is also handed down to visual effects artists who then creates all those fanciful explosions, Muzzle flashes, water .etc.

Now it's not done there! Alot of times, different programs are used to create these stuff so in the end, the colors do not actually match (can't be helped much), so it is sent down to the Compositors to ensure that the colors conform to the scene and that it's not too different from one another.

Post-production is where all the assets are ready to be compiled into 1 grand masterpiece
Once all the assets are available and ready to be pieced up, they are handed down to the Editors to be pieced together into what it is supposed to look like. Normally, certain ideas thought of during pre-production will be either reworked or thrown away here because either it doesn't aid in the story telling or it is simply just inappropriate.
But them you need sound. That where the Sound engineers and Sound folly artists come in. They add depth, detail and realism into the sound.

*and the list goes on*

If animation is easy, then everyone can do it :D

I don't see much people doing it and therefore it must be hard.
